CLASS B MOTORHOMES FROM NIRVC

WHAT IS A CLASS B RV?

Class B RVs are the smallest class of recreational vehicle. Also known as camper vans, Adventure Vans or simply campers, Class Bs range from about 15-21 feet in length and weigh between 5,000-12,000 pounds. The design and capabilities of these RVs differ and will depend upon the chassis used to frame out the vehicle - affecting its off-road ability, roof height, interior design and fuel type.

CLASS B RV FEATURES

Class B RVs typically house 2-4 people and feature some, but not all, of the living amenities of Classes A and C - but, on a much smaller scale. Conveniences can include a small kitchen, toilet and shower (together, called a "wet bath"), TV/entertainment, power inverter and bed(s). Storage space and greater amenities are sacrificed for better gas mileage and tremendous agility. Available as gas or diesel engines, Class B motorhomes typically offer between 18-25 miles per gallon. Their smaller size and streamlined design mean camper vans can go just about anywhere and are both practical for everyday use and exploring off-road. Many Class Bs even offer all-wheel drive for the rough n' tough adventurer. Boondocking and off-grid living are popular uses of Class B owners looking to live the #vanlife.

CLASS B RV FEATURES

Class B owners tend to focus on their time spent outside the vehicle, rather than in it. Therefore, excessive storage space, complex systems and separate living quarters become less important. Focus instead turns to ease of ride, pace of travel and preferred functionality. Class Bs, or Adventure Vans, are popular with solo travelers, boondockers(those who enjoy outdoor, off-grid camping) and couples of all ages - although the fastest growing demographic of late has been millennials and Gen Z-ers.

Popular brands Class B RVs include Coachmen RV, Entegra Coach, Fleetwood RV, Pleasure Way, Regency RV and Winnebago, to name a few.

GAS OR DIESEL?

It's one of the big decisions when buying a Class B RV - do you want a gas or diesel engine? While gas models tend to be more affordable, diesels are more fuel efficient.

Make sure to consider power, towing capacity, operating costs, resale value and more to find the right Adventure Van for you.

Pros and Cons of Class B Motor Coaches

CLASS B PROS:

  • SAFETY - Even in a compact build form class B RVs still contain standard safety amenities such as seatbelts and airbags
  • MANEUVERABILITY - Because of their smaller size, there's almost nowhere a camper van can't go
  • USE - Not just for road-trips and camping, Class Bs function equally well for day trips, tailgating, daily commutes and more
  • FUEL ECONOMY - Class B is the most fuel-efficient class of motorhome, averaging 18-25 MPG
  • PRICE - Typically the most affordable RV class, prices tend to range between $60, 000 and $150,000 – fewer systems also means fewer fixes and insurance costs are lower than other RV classes
  • PARKING - Parking offers little difficulty and few restrictions – most Class Bs can even be stored in a home garage
  • TOWING - 3,000-5,000 lbs towing capacity is enough to haul a trailer or small vehicle
  • SEATBELTS - This crucial safety feature isn't included in other RV classes

CLASS B CONS:

  • LIMITED SPACE - The goal is often to spend time outside the van
  • STORAGE SPACE - There's a lot to pack into a limited space - you'll have to be selective about the items you bring (however, our upfitting specialists can help find ways in which you can maximize that space)
  • SMALLER TANKS - A smaller vehicle means smaller water tanks, meaning shorter time spent off-grid
